Dougie's Ton & 99 Other Sonnets

Syd Harrex

Syd Harrex is an accomplished poet who has made the sonnet form his specialty. This collection celebrates a range of themes centring on friendship and personal reflections and observations. Many of the poems are triggers for memory.
Where were you in 1974?
The collection takes its title from a poem celebrating Doug Walters’ famous century against England in 1974 at the WACA Ground. Like the death of JFK,
the event is a trigger for many of us, taking us back to another time, another place, another world.

‘One of this country’s more original and moving lyric poets, [Harrex] has turned the sonnet form … to tasks and uses which only great poetic skill, passion and technique could underwrite.’
Brian Matthews

‘The pure pleasure of finding intelligence, assured technique and a passionate search for modern figures that will fit the life of the spirit is matched by the delight we feel in the graceful wit that lightens serious matters.’
Gwen Harwood
