Ideal for the Career Path I Took
1938 – 1939
Bruce McGowan
In retrospect, the overall impression of the education that I received at the school is that it was ideal for the career path that I took. The manual subjects of woodworking, sheetmetal work and fitting and turning were excellent supplements to the science subjects of chemistry, physics and of course mathematics in the technical, and subsequently, the electronic engineering courses that I undertook. In addition, they provided an admirable base for solving and correcting many of the home handyman problems that have arisen in my 45 years of home ownership. Not to mention the savings made in not having to employ tradesmen for minor jobs.
After Intermediate I worked as an office boy/messenger. In 1941 I commenced training as a junior mechanic with the PMG. From 1944 to 1946 I was in the RAAF. In 1956 I went to the School of Mines to matriculate. From 1959 to 1961 I completed the Bachelor of Technology (Electronic Engineering course) at the School of Mines/ South Australian Institute of Technology, the degree being awarded by the University of Adelaide. From 1961 to 1981 I was employed by PMG/Telecom as a professional engineer.
