School Diary of a First Year Art Student in 1974

Monday
Tried my new buckle-on aero-flight machine. It worked splendidly. Arrived in due course at school, and came to rest on the new landing roof.
Had to pull my drawing board to pieces because it was jammed. These collapsible steel drawing boards are becoming quite popular. They are magnetised, and the steel corner pieces on the drawing paper save clips being used. Also pencils with steel holders just hang from the edge of the board.
Tuesday
Magazine entries are now being collected, and as my subject was ‘The Old Masters’, and I was not sure of the name of Sir Joshua Reynolds’ last picture, I looked it up in our Armstrong Memorial Library.
Went to Coles at lunch-time to do some shopping, ascended to the tenth floor on the escalator, and bought a new screen for my teliwiraphone, this being a cross between a wireless and telephone, with television, to be carried in the pocket.
Wednesday
Had a slight collision this morning, but my emergency parachute worked well. The autogiro sky policeman was very annoyed, because I was muddled, and ducked under him, instead of waiting for the signal to pass over.
Lunch today was composed of two synthetic pills, as I was in a hurry.
Thursday
Attended school assembly this morning. We were given the afternoon to visit the exhibition of paintings by Letty Parsons. I believe she attended this school many years ago.
Friday
Overhauled my aero-flight machine this morning, so that it would be ready for my flight to Yass (New South Wales) on Saturday.
I dropped my steel drawing board from the sixth floor to the third, and it did make a noise. I have just been told that years ago the students had to tiptoe along the passages and not make a sound. Fancy that!
